SRD Grant  |  SASSA 2026

Millions of people in South Africa meet their daily needs through SASSA’s SRD R370 grant every month. Food, transport, children’s school expenses, or monthly bills — this small amount of money is a major source of support for many families.

📅 Monthly Eligibility assessed separately each month

But even after applying, many people still have questions in their minds — what stage is my application currently at, when will the money be paid, or has it been delayed for some reason? To avoid this uncertainty, the only way is to regularly check your SASSA status.

⚠️ Many people think that once their application is approved, it will continue permanently, but that is not the case with the SRD grant. Eligibility is assessed separately for each month, so receiving the grant one month does not guarantee that you will receive it the next month.
🔔 For this reason, it is important to develop the habit of regularly checking your status.

What is SASSA Status Check?

SASSA or South African Social Security Agency is the South African government agency that manages various social grants for elderly, disabled, children and unemployed citizens. Government assistance reaches millions of citizens every month through this agency. To run this huge system smoothly, SASSA follows strict rules.

Disabled
👶 Children
👤 Unemployed Citizens

Among the various grants, the SRD R370 Grant is the one that most people apply for. It is not a one-time grant; rather, it is provided every month after a monthly eligibility assessment. This means that every month, the system evaluates your income, bank transactions, and other information.

💵
SRD Grant Amount R370 per month Eligibility assessed separately every month

As the decision on the SRD grant is made separately each month, applicants should regularly check their application status. After checking the status, you will be able to know:-

Whether your application is Approved, Pending, or Declined this month.
📅 When the money will be paid into your account, including the exact payment date.
If your application is declined, you can find out the exact reason so that you can resolve the problem yourself.
🏦 Whether there is any problem with your bank details or identity verification; if it is corrected on time, you may receive the money in the next payment batch.
In simple words, if you do not check your status, you will remain in the dark, but by checking it regularly, you will clearly understand what is happening at every stage.

How to Check SASSA Status: 4 Free Methods

SASSA has provided several easy and completely free ways for anyone to check their status from home. Which method is best for you depends on data availability, whether you have a smartphone, and how much detail you want to know.

1
🌐

Official SRD Website srd.sassa.gov.za

It is the most reliable and widely used method. Go to the official website and click on the “Application Status” or “Check Status” option. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the cellphone number used when you applied. Click the submit button, and you will see the status for the current month along with the previous months.

✅ Benefit You can see complete details, view records from previous months, find the exact reason if your application is declined, and access the appeal portal directly from here.
⚠️ Limitation Internet or mobile data is required, and the website may become slow due to heavy traffic around payment dates. At this time, be patient and try again later.
2
📞

SASSA USSD Code *120*69277# / *120*3210#

Those who don’t have a smartphone or internet access can use USSD as the easiest option. It can be dialled from any ordinary phone, and it is completely free. After entering the correct code on your phone’s dial pad and pressing the call button, a menu will appear on the screen. From there, you can check your status by following the step-by-step instructions.

✅ Benefit No data is required, the code works on basic phones on any network, and it is especially useful for people living in rural areas.
⚠️ Limitation The information is limited; only the basic status is shown, and the detailed reason for a decline is not available here.

💬

SASSA WhatsApp Status Check 082 046 8553

SASSA Toll-Free Call Centre Number 0800 60 10 11

✅ Benefit You can speak directly with an agent, making it easier to explain complex problems, and in special cases, the agent can provide a specific solution.
⚠️ Limitation The line can be very busy around payment dates or at the beginning of the month, so you may have to wait on hold for a long time. It is open Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00.

2026/27 Payment Dates Schedule

The SRD R370 grant does not have a specific fixed date. It operates completely differently from other permanent grants. Each applicant’s payment is released in batches after their monthly verification is completed. It is generally processed in the last week of the month, approximately between the 24th and 30th or 31st, depending on working days.

Jan 2026 26–30 Jan Payment Window
Feb 2026 23–27 Feb Payment Window
Mar 2026 24–30 Mar Payment Window
Apr 2026 24–30 Apr Payment Window
May 2026 25–30 May Payment Window
Jun 2026 24–30 Jun Payment Window
July 2026 24–31 July Payment Window
⚠️ Remember, these dates are only general windows. The actual payment date for your application can only be known by checking your status, as each applicant’s batch processing is completed at a different time. An “Approved” status does not mean the money will enter your account immediately; the bank transfer usually takes one to two working days.

Other Grants Payment Dates

Permanent grants like Older Persons, Disability, and Children’s Grants are paid separately over three working days each month. The general rule is that the Older Persons Grant is paid first, followed by the Disability Grant, and then the children-related grants.

Additional Status Messages You May See

In addition to the above general statuses, some other specific messages are sometimes seen on the portal, which create confusion in the minds of many.

✅ Approved but No Payment Date

Your application has been accepted, but batch processing has not yet started or been completed. Ensure that your SASSA bank details are correct and in your name. SRD payments are normally made from 24th to 30th.

👉 Contact SASSA only if 3 working days after the 30th you still don’t see a pay date.
⚠️ Self Exclusion Response Found

You yourself withdrew your application for a specific month or did not respond to a confirmation notification. Review your submission on the SRD portal. If there is an error, ask for a review within 30 days.

👉 If someone used your ID to apply, report it to SASSA and open a case with SAPS.
⏳ Period Pending

SASSA is still checking your income for that month. The result isn’t final yet. Older months usually update once this month’s bank check is done.

👉 Wait 7–14 days and check again. Don’t reapply.
✅ Period Approved

The above month passed all tests. Your R370 payment is verified. Your payment dates and methods will be reflected in the portal.

👉 There’s nothing else you need to do. Collect from your bank, cash transfer, or designated store.
❌ Period Declined

The above month got rejected due to income/bank deposit above R628 or incorrect information on your part. All other months are good to go.

👉 You can ask for a reconsideration of that particular month within 30 days.
🔄 Reapplication Required

Your old application is no longer active, and the system wants you to apply again. This is usually seen after staying Declined for a long time or when the status has not been updated for a long period.

👉 To apply again, go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Keep your ID, cell number, and bank details ready.

Troubleshooting Common SRD R370 Status Problems

The most common problems faced by applicants, along with their solutions, are discussed below.

Pending for more than 3 weeks

Generally, the verification process may take 2 to 3 weeks, especially when a large number of applications are being processed. But if it exceeds 3 weeks, call the toll-free number (0800 60 10 11) and ask where your application is stuck, as sometimes there are system issues that cannot be resolved automatically.

💡 Call 0800 60 10 11 and ask where your application is stuck.

Declined due to Income Detected

If more than R628 is deposited into your bank account even once, the system considers it income, whether it is a salary, a loan, or a transfer from your family. If that is not your regular income, the only solution is to appeal along with your at least 3 months bank statement and an explanation of the transaction.

💡 Appeal with at least 3 months bank statement and an explanation of the transaction.
🏦

Bank Details Rejected

Make sure that the account is opened in your own name and that the name matches the ID number exactly. If you use someone else’s account or there is even a slight mismatch in the spelling of your name, your bank details may be rejected.

💡 Use only an account in your own name with exact spelling matching your ID number.
⚠️

Identity Verification Failed

It is generally due to a mismatch in your name, date of birth, or ID number in the Home Affairs database. This problem cannot be solved online; you have to go directly to the nearest SASSA or Home Affairs office with your original ID.

💡 Visit the nearest SASSA or Home Affairs office with your original ID.

Approved but Payment Not Received

Wait for at least 2 to 3 working days after the payment date, as bank transactions can take some time. If the payment is still not received after waiting, check whether your bank details are correct and active.

💡 Wait 2–3 working days after the payment date, then verify your bank details are correct and active.
💸

Payment Failed / Reversed

Generally, this happens if your account is closed or frozen, or if some account details are incorrect. If you update the correct information on the portal, the money will usually be sent again in the next batch.

💡 Update the correct bank details on the portal and the money will usually be sent again in the next batch.

SRD Means Test: The R628 Threshold

To get the SRD grant, your income must be below a specified limit; this is called the Means Test. It is one of the most common reasons for an SRD application to be declined, so it is important to understand this properly.

💰
Income Limit — Means Test R628 per month Stay below this limit to remain eligible for the SRD grant
🔍 How it is checked SASSA automatically cross-checks data from SARS, UIF, NSFAS, and various banks to see whether more than R628 has been deposited into any account in your name.
📋 Which income is considered Regular salary, UIF payments, freelance or part-time work income, even a one-time large amount sent by family or a loan can also be considered. It considers the total of all deposits made during that month.
🏛️ SARS Revenue Department
💼 UIF Unemployment Fund
🎓 NSFAS Education Fund
🏦 Banks All accounts in your name
⚠️ When application fails — Example If the total deposits exceed R628 in any one month, the application is declined for that particular month. For example, if R200 is received from family and R500 from part-time work, the total is R700, so it also exceeds the limit, even though neither individual transaction is above R628.

Where Will You Get the Grant Money From?

SASSA offers a variety of ways to withdraw grant money, so that people in any situation can easily access their money. The money will stay in your account until you take it out.

⚠️ Note: If you don’t collect your grant for 3 months in a row, SASSA may take the money back.

Who Qualifies for the SRD R370 Grant

The applicant should be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or a valid permit holder.

The applicant should be between 18 and 59 years of age.

The applicant should be unemployed and have no regular source of income.

The applicant must not be receiving money from UIF or NSFAS. The applicant cannot receive any other SASSA grant at the same time, except the Child Support Grant.

The applicant should not reside in any government-funded institution, such as a prison or a state care facility.

The applicant’s monthly income should be below R628, according to the means test discussed above.

If any of these conditions are not met, the application may be declined, so it is wise to carefully review your situation before applying.

Appeal Process: Step by Step

There is no need to be discouraged if your application is declined. You can appeal by following a specific process, and in many cases, the decision may be changed if you provide the correct evidence.

1

Submit the dispute within 90 days: You must apply for reconsideration through the official Appeals portal srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals within 90 days from the date you are informed of the decline decision. If this time limit expires, you can no longer appeal for that particular month.

2

Collect the necessary evidence: bank statements, an explanation of your income, or any document that proves your actual financial situation. For example, a one-time deposit was actually a loan or a gift, not regular income. The clearer the evidence you provide, the higher the chances of your appeal being accepted.

3

Independent Tribunal Review: After the appeal is submitted, an independent committee or Tribunal will review your case. This process may take anywhere from a few weeks to a maximum of 90 days, depending on the number of cases currently under review. Regularly check the Tribunal portal using your reference number. You will receive an SMS notification when a decision has been made on your appeal.

4

Final decision: Once the review is completed, the decision is communicated through the portal or via SMS. If the result is in your favour, you may also receive payment for the outstanding months, calculated from the previous period.
